On July 9, 1997, appellants Julio Santiago-Adams and José Ariel Cruz-Rivera, accompanied by two others, broke into the home of Carlos Flores-Rodríguez in Juana Diaz, Puerto Rico; the robbery ended with Flores-Rodríguez dead, shot seven times.
