A black widow spider bit Anthony Cowart while Cowart was a patient at the St. Joseph's Hospital emergency room. Cowart and his wife, Terry, sued the hospital, seeking compensation for the bite under theories of ordinary negligence, negligent infliction of emotional distress, and loss of consortium.
