On July 11, 2000, the defendant, Mario English, was convicted in the circuit court of Rock Island County of armed robbery. On August 24, 2000, English was sentenced to a term of 20 years in prison. Defendant's conviction and sentence were affirmed by this court on January 8, 2002. On September 30, 2002, English filed a pro se petition for postconviction relief challenging his sentence.
