On March 5, 2003, Nathaniel Powell Douglas died intestate in Jefferson County. He left surviving him as the sole heir and distributee of his estate an 18-year-old mentally retarded daughter, Eloise Hoyrd, who was at the time of Nathaniel's death in residence at a facility for unwed mothers, having delivered a child in January 2003.
