In 2001, Thomas Mattson filed suit under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, alleging that his employer, Caterpillar, Inc., retaliated against him in response to a charge of sexual harassment that he had filed with the Illinois Department of Human Rights ("IDHR") and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission ("EEOC").
