Shirley Hoffman, who is missing her left arm below the elbow, brought this employment discrimination case under the Americans with Disabilities Act, 42 U.S.C. § 12101 et seq. ("ADA"). Hoffman alleged that her employer, Caterpillar, Inc., engaged in unlawful disparate treatment by refusing to train her to operate a high-speed document scanner.
