The plaintiff, Rebecca Goulart, a visiting nurse, slipped and fell on icy steps at the Hemenway Senior Housing Complex owned and maintained by the defendant, Canton Housing Authority. She claimed that the defendant's maintenance workers caused an unnatural accumulation of ice on the exterior landing and stairs where she fell at a back entrance of the building, and she brought suit in the Superior Court to recover damages for her injuries.
