In the course of a lengthy roadside stop, Illinois state troopers discovered more than 400 pounds of marijuana in a 1957 Volkswagen pickup truck that defendant Michael Hornbecker had been towing across the country. Hornbecker subsequently pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute marijuana, but reserved his right to appeal the district court's earlier denial of his suppression motion.
