On April 11, 2001, Alaska State Troopers searched the Kodiak residence of Pedro Cruz-Reyes and found a "black box" connected to his television set—i.e., an electronic device capable of converting or unscrambling cable television signals, thus allowing Cruz-Reyes to view all of the premium cable services offered by General Communication, Inc.
