We are asked to reverse a judgment for punitive damages on the grounds that the amount awarded exceeds the evidence as to defendant's financial resources. The record does in fact show that the sum well exceeds the ability to pay proved at trial. The issue is whether the basis for the award—defendant injured plaintiff as a result of driving while intoxicated—authorizes such financial castigation...
