On June 30, 2000, pursuant to a negotiated agreement, the appellant, Carl Allen Simmons, pled guilty to unlawful distribution of a controlled substance. The trial court sentenced him, as a habitual offender, to serve a term of twenty years in prison. See § 13A-5-9(c)(2), Ala.Code 1975.
