On October 24, 2000, Karen Burnett Gilliam, the mother, and James Elmer Gilliam III, the father, were divorced by a judgment of the Etowah Circuit Court based on incompatibility of temperament. The divorce judgment incorporated an agreement of the parties in which the parties agreed, among other things, to joint custody of the only child born of the marriage.
