This direct criminal appeal arises from appellant Edgar Alexander Torrealba's November 14, 2001 convictions of one count of conspiracy to commit hostage taking, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 1203(a), one substantive count of hostage taking, also in violation of § 1203(a), and one count of using and carrying a firearm during and in relation to a federal crime of violence, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 924(c).
