HANSON, Justice.
Following a jury trial, respondent Cecil John Reiners was found guilty of assault in the first degree for striking Jose Padilla in the head with a wooden board. The court of appeals reversed the conviction, concluding that the trial court committed reversible error by denying Reiners' peremptory challenge of an African-American prospective juror and, as a result of that error, Reiners was entitled to a new trial.
