On the last day of the 1999-2000 school year, thirteen-year-old Nathaniel Brazill shot and killed a teacher at his middle school, Barry Grunow.

The state charged Brazill with first degree murder and aggravated assault with a firearm. The jury convicted him of second degree murder and aggravated assault with a firearm. The trial judge sentenced him to concurrent sentences: a mandatory minimum sentence of twenty-eight years in prison on the murder...
