A jury convicted defendant, Artarius Jett, of first degree murder (720 ILCS 5/9-1(a) (West 2000)). Defendant received a sentence of natural life in prison. On appeal, defendant challenges the charging instrument and the jury instructions, arguing that they improperly included, as an element of first degree murder, "that the offense was accompanied by exceptionally brutal or heinous behavior indicative of wanton cruelty...
