Defendant Cecil Cooper was convicted at trial of three separate counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 922(g). The government sought application of 18 U.S.C. § 924(e), which provides a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years for any defendant convicted under 18 U.S.C. § 922(g) and who has three previous convictions for "violent felon[ies]."
