On February 5, 1991, the defendant, then under indictment for murder in the first degree, pleaded guilty to a charge of murder in the second degree in connection with the death of Karen Barriere. His plea was accepted by a judge of the Superior Court, after a colloquy in which the defendant stated that he had no reason to doubt that the crime occurred in the manner described by the prosecutor, even though he had no independent recollection of the killing...
