¶ 1 Michael J. Shannon arranged to terminate his employment with Platinum Technology and signed a contract to become an independent contractor doing work for Platinum. Immediately thereafter, Platinum announced a mass layoff of its employees, whereupon Shannon sought from Platinum back pay pursuant to the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification ("WARN") Act.
