In October 1999, the State charged defendant, Charles E. Bramlett, with the offense of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, a Class 2 felony, in violation of section 12-16(c)(l)(i) of the Criminal Code of 1961 (Code) (720 ILCS 5/12-16(c)(l)(i) (West 1998)).
