Justice THOMAS delivered the opinion of the court:

Following a jury trial, defendant, Melvin Tisdel, was convicted of the first degree murder of Julio Lagunas. Defendant was sentenced to 35 years' imprisonment. The appellate court reversed defendant's conviction on the ground that the trial court should not have allowed the State's witnesses to testify concerning a nonidentification lineup. 316 Ill.App.3d 1143,
