Defendant was convicted after a jury trial in Henry County of multiple counts of first degree murder (720 ILCS 5/9-1(a) (West 1994)), and of other crimes in connection with the killing of Laurie Gwinn. After the jury found defendant eligible for the death penalty, he waived his right to a jury for the second phase of the sentencing hearing.
