In March 1999, the State charged defendant, William M. Brown, with aggravated battery of a child (720 ILCS 5/12-4.3(a) (West 1998)). In July 1999, a jury found defendant guilty of the crime charged. In August 1999, the trial court denied defendant's posttrial motion and sentenced him to 14 years' imprisonment. In that same month, the trial court denied defendant's motion to reconsider.
