Justice GORDON delivered the opinion of the court:

Defendant Chevae Langston was found guilty of first-degree murder (720 ILCS 5/9-1(a)(2) (West 1994)) on January 26, 1996. On April 2, 1996, he was sentenced to 42 years in prison. At that time the trial judge informed him that he was not entitled to credit for good conduct and that he would have to serve 100 percent of his sentence pursuant to the truth-in-sentencing law. 730 ILCS 5/3-6-3(a)(2)(i) (West
