Justice MYERSCOUGH delivered the opinion of the court:

In November 1998, the State charged defendant, Jackie Williamson, with burglary and criminal damage to property over $300. 720 ILCS 5/19-1(a), 21-1(1)(a) (West 1998). At the State's request, the trial court dismissed the criminal damage to property charge. In March 1999, a jury found defendant guilty of burglary. In April 1999, the trial court denied defendant's posttrial motion; sentenced defendant to 15 years...
