I. INTRODUCTION

Eighty-five-year-old Violet M.B. Houssien died alone in December 1997. In a will executed two years previously, she left almost all of her $1.59 million estate to an acquaintance, Elma Crittell, and named Elma's husband, Edmond, as a contingent beneficiary and the executor of the estate. Several interested parties challenged the will, alleging that it was fraudulent, that Houssien lacked testamentary...
