The appellant was admitted to Pilgrim Psychiatric Center (hereinafter the hospital) on October 23, 2000, as an involuntary patient. He was diagnosed as suffering from schizoaffective disorder and refused to undergo electroconvulsive therapy (hereinafter ECT).
