DRANGINIS, J.

This case involves the resolution of two appeals by the defendant, James R. Silva.1 The defendant's direct appeal is from the trial court's judgment of conviction rendered after a plea of guilty, pursuant to the Alford doctrine,2 of murder in violation of General Statutes § 53a-54a.3
