The defendant, Thomas L. Furgerson, was convicted by a jury of possession of cocaine, a Schedule II controlled dangerous substance, a violation of La.R.S. 40:967 F(1)(b). The trial court sentenced Furgerson to serve 30 years at hard labor, without benefit of parole, probation, or suspension of sentence, and to pay a fine of $100,000.00 or, in default thereof, serve 1000 days in the parish jail, with credit for time served.
