Donnis Kent, a former employee of the Alfalfa County Clerk's office, brought this action under 42 U.S.C. § 1983 alleging retaliatory discharge in violation of the First Amendment. Kent's employment as a deputy clerk was terminated six months after her unsuccessful campaign to unseat Bruce Martin as County Clerk and the publication in a local newspaper of her statements concerning Martin's job performance.
