PAYNE, J., for the Court:

¶ 1. One November 3, 1999, a Bolivar County Circuit Court jury convicted David Lee Hayes of the crime of statutory rape. Hayes was sentenced as an habitual offender to serve life in prison without parole. At the end of the State's case, Hayes moved for a directed verdict, but the motion was denied. Hayes's motion for judgment notwithstanding the verdict, or in the alternative, a new trial was also denied...
