On December 21, 1998, a grand jury in the Circuit Court of the City of Charlottesville indicted the defendant, Latasha Alon Gardner, for obtaining by false pretenses United States currency of a value greater than $200.00, "the property of George Gardner," with the intent to defraud him. Code § 18.2-178.1 The trial court, sitting without a jury, convicted the defendant of the charge
