The appellant, Marvin Ardis III, was convicted of the unlawful possession of marijuana in the first degree, a violation § 13A-12-213, Ala.Code 1975. He was sentenced to four years' imprisonment for his conviction.

On appeal, Ardis, who was not represented by counsel at trial, contends that he was denied his constitutional right to counsel because, he says, he did not knowingly and intelligently waive his right to trial counsel....
