On January 28, 1999, Defendant Shawna L. Smith ("Smith") was arrested for bank fraud. She confessed within an hour after her arrest. Later, she moved to suppress her confession, but the motion was denied and her confession was used against her at trial. A jury found her guilty of six counts of bank fraud in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 1344 and one count of using a false social security number in violation of 42 U.S.C. § 408(a)(7)(B). The...
