Norman Kile Zeller leased a Pontiac Bonneville automobile from General Motors Acceptance Corporation (GMAC). He arranged for Metropolitan Property & Casualty Insurance Company to issue an automobile liability insurance policy on the car. On May 6, 1993, Metropolitan cancelled the policy for nonpayment of premiums. Six weeks later, Zeller's son was involved in a collision, and the car was a total loss.
