Lorraine Collins was brought to the emergency room at University Hospital (formerly Hotel Dieu) at approximately 1:30 p.m. on April 3, 1993 by her daughter and son-in-law. Mrs. Collins had symptoms of fever, an elevated white blood count, and a disoriented mental state.1 Mrs. Collins was given a preliminary examination and tests were performed.
