David Dudley is a professional bass fisherman. In March 1996, he was fishing in a tournament sponsored by the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society (B.A.S.S.) in Corsicana, Texas. He and some fellow fishermen visited a local tackle-and-bait shop during the tournament. Dudley apparently purchased some hooks or other fishing paraphernalia.

The owner of the tackle shop, Shane Trull, followed the tournament and saw Dudley at the next day's weigh-in. He...
