On 18 August 1996 Daniel Hlasnick and his wife, Darlene Hlasnick (collectively the Hlasnicks), were injured in an automobile accident in Granville County. Mr. Hlasnick was driving a 1994 Dodge pickup truck carrying Mrs. Hlasnick as a passenger. The accident occurred when a vehicle owned and operated by Norman Smith (Smith) rear-ended the pickup truck.
