On July 15, 1996, the plaintiff, Judith Gray, filed a complaint in the Superior Court against the defendant, James Giroux, alleging that, while the parties were playing a game of golf, the defendant "negligently and carelessly played his ball, causing it to strike the [p]laintiff in the head, ... thereby caus[ing] her serious bodily injury."
