BACKGROUND

William H Johnson was a prolific artist during the 1920s through 1940s. Johnson was born in South Carolina in 1901. He studied art in New York and Massachusetts in the 1920s. Johnson then moved from New York to Denmark in 1946. While traveling in Norway in 1947 Johnson was diagnosed with tertiary syphilis and deemed mentally incompetent....
