KAPLAN, J.
The defendant Titus Coleman appeals from his District Court conviction under G. L. c. 269, § 10(a), of illegal possession of a handgun. Agreeing with the defendant's contention, we hold that the judge erred in failing to suppress statements secured by the police from the defendant in the course of a custodial interrogation conducted without the necessary Miranda warnings. Accordingly, we shall reverse the conviction for a new trial.
