COWIN, J.

The defendant, Denton A. Ashman, was convicted of murder in the first degree, based on both deliberate premeditation and extreme atrocity or cruelty. We affirm the conviction and decline to exercise our power under G. L. c. 278, § 33E, to reduce the murder verdict to second degree or to order a new trial.
