Wayne Elder, the former Chief of Police for the Town of Blacksburg, brought this action for libel against The Gaffney Ledger, Inc. (Publisher), which publishes The Gaffney Ledger. The jury awarded Elder $10,000 in actual damages and $300,000 in punitive damages.
