In March 1997, defendant, Shane M. Anderson, pleaded guilty to armed robbery (720 ILCS 5/18-2(a) (West 1996)) in an open plea, meaning that no agreement existed between defendant and the State regarding his sentence or the dismissal of other pending charges.
