CHEHARDY, J.

On November 15, 1996, the Jefferson Parish District Attorney's Office filed a bill of information charging defendant, Eric Ewens, with simple burglary of a motor vehicle, a violation of La. R.S. 14:62. At his arraignment, defendant plead not guilty. On March 5, 1997, defendant was tried before a six-person jury, which returned a unanimous verdict of guilty as charged. On March 21, 1997, the trial court sentenced defendant to five years at hard labor....
