Under the Workers' Compensation Act, an employer must pay a death benefit to the dependents of an employee who dies as a result of a work-related injury. (Lab.Code, § 4701, subd. (b); all further statutory references are to this code unless otherwise indicated.) In cases of partial dependency, the death benefit is "four times the amount annually devoted to the support of the partial dependents" subject to a statutory cap linked to the date of the decedent...
