BACKGROUND

In May 1997, Jashawn R. Smith ("Smith") and co-defendant Latoja E. Hall ("Hall"), abducted Virginia Hope Wyatt ("Wyatt"), a 72-year-old woman, at gun-point from a Dallas mall parking garage. The Defendants traveled north into Oklahoma in Wyatt's car, using Wyatt's credit card to purchase gas.
