On January 11, 1996, caught in a furious storm during a mid-winter crossing of the Atlantic, the crew of the vessel M/V AMPHION abandoned ship and her cargo of steel several hundred miles off the Canadian Maritime coast. The crew was rescued and salvors recovered the AMPHION and her cargo. Cargo consignees nonetheless filed lawsuits against the vessel's owner, Kreta Shipping, S.A. ("Kreta"), alleging that the steel had been damaged. Kreta responded...
