On the evening of January 25, 1996, Gene V. Martin asked a female acquaintance, K.W., to go for a ride with him. Martin's ostensible purpose was to have a frank conversation with K.W. about a mutual friend. During this drive, Martin stopped his truck and offered K.W. some cocaine; she accepted. After they shared the cocaine, Martin drove to a remote location. He asked K.W. to get out of the truck, telling her that he needed...
