HOLLAND, Justice:

The petitioner-appellant, Joseph W. Smith, Jr. (the "Father") and the respondent-appellee, Diane E. Francisco (the "Mother"), were married on June 28, 1991. Three and one-half years later the parties separated. During a brief attempted reconciliation, the Mother became pregnant. In September of 1995, the Father petitioned for divorce. The Divorce Decree was granted by the Family Court on December 8, 1995...
